Inside each tooth is a series of nerves and blood vessels called the pulp of the tooth. When the pulp becomes infected or damaged, it must be removed to prevent further pain, the spread of infection or the development of a pus-filled pocket called an abscess. The procedure that’s done to remove the pulp and refill the tooth is called a root canal.

In addition to the pain of a toothache, you may need a root canal if you have:

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Pain when you chew or touch the tooth
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums
  • Pimples on the gums

However, sometimes a root canal is needed although no symptoms are present. Stay on top of regular checkups with Dr. Capio so he can make a note of any issue that might indicate you need a root canal before it becomes symptomatic.

Dr. Capio starts by taking an X-ray of the tooth. That allows him to determine if there are signs of infection surrounding the tooth. Using local anesthesia, he numbs the area around the tooth, so you’ll be comfortable during the procedure. To keep the area clean and free of saliva as he works, he may place a rubber dam around the tooth.

After everything is in place, he drills a tiny hole into the tooth and uses a special instrument to remove the pulp and any infection. Once he has completely cleaned the inside parts of the tooth — called the pulp chamber and the root canals — he fills the space with a compound and a filling to close the hole. Because teeth that need root canals usually have severe decay, often you’ll need a crown to make the tooth fully functional after the procedure.

If you think you might need a root canal, contact Dr. Capio. He’ll assess your tooth to determine if a root canal is the right course of action for you.
